We have visualised the exact shoe that we want. We know exactly what we want. He found one I liked, disputed with the merchant over a few dinars, wanted to walk out, and at my plea, agreed on a price. I left with an abbaya that today still has some of the spices I’d carried in my luggage in a journey that lasted from Baghdad to Detroit three days.

What’s an abbaya? It’s a veil that reminds me of my mother and the neighborhood women who’d sometimes wear it when they went to the market. Since Saddam encouraged women to wear western clothing and he was against Islamic fundamentalists, the burka wasn’t allowed in Iraq. Usually older women wore the abbaya. They did so for religious purposes, as Islam requires women to dress modestly in order to keep the focus of beauty on spiritual and not superficial attributes. Wearing the veil was also a way to avoid harassment. But mostly, they wore it because it was part of a culture that predates Islam by many centuries.

In the Near East, Assyrian kings first introduced both the seclusion of women in royal harem and the veil. Prostitutes and slaves, however, were told not to veil, and were slashed if they disobeyed this law. This practice also appeared in classical Greece, in the Byzantine Christian world, in Persia and in India among upper caste women. It’s suggested that afterwards it spread among the Arabs.

Muslims in their first century were relaxed about female dress. As Islam reached other lands, regional practices, including the covering of women, were adopted. Yet it was only in the second Islamic century that the veil became common, first used among the powerful and rich as a status symbol. Muhammad’s wives originally dressed in veil in order for people to distinguish them from other women.

Throughout Islamic history only a part of the urban classes were veiled and secluded. Rural and nomadic women, the majority of the population, were not. The veil did not appear as a common rule to be followed until around the tenth century. In the Middle Ages numerous laws were developed which most often placed women at a greater disadvantage than in earlier times.

For 2,000 years, Catholic women have veiled themselves before entering a church or any time they are in the presence of the Blessed Sacrament (e.g., during sick calls). It was written into the 1917 Code of Canon Law, Canon 1262, that women must cover their heads – “especially when they approach the holy table”

For many centuries (until around 1175) Anglo-Saxon and then Anglo-Norman women, with the exception of young unmarried girls, wore veils that entirely covered their hair, and often their necks up to their chins. It was in the Tudor period (1485), when hoods became increasingly popular, that veils of this type became less common.

Sometimes a sheer was draped over and pinned to the bonnet or hat of a woman in mourning. They would also have been used as a simple method of hiding the identity of a woman who was travelling to meet a lover, or doing anything she didn’t want other people to find out about. Veils were also sometimes worn to protect the complexion from sun and wind damage (when un-tanned skin was fashionable), or to keep dust out of a woman’s face. Conversely, veils are often part of the stereotypical image of the courtesan and harem woman where the mysterious veil hints at sensuality and the unknown.

Among the Tuareg of West Africa, women do not traditionally wear the veil, while men do. It’s believed that the veil wards off evil spirits, but most probably relates to protection against the harsh desert sands as well. This veil is worn from 25 years of age and is never removed, even in front of family members.

What about the origin of a bride’s veil? Some say that the veil was introduced in ancient Rome to keep away the evil spirits. It’s also said that it was a symbol of purity, chastity, and modesty. Other say that the origin of the bridal veil was due to the circumstances of an arranged marriage. In days past, men bargained with an eligible young lady’s father for their hand in marriage. After the ceremony, the veil was lifted to reveal the bride’s features. This was to keep a groom from backing out of the deal if he didn’t like what he saw.

With my mother, the veil was used for convenience, when she didn’t want to change from her nightgown in order to go to the bakery and buy bread. Or when my cousin wanted to meet her lover without anyone noticing her. Or it was worn by those who found it attractive or simply liked having it flutter around their ankles.

When I was a little girl, I used my mother’s veil to play house. I couldn’t wait to grow up and have my own veil, not knowing then that one day wearing fabric in such a manner, or not wearing it, could cost women their lives.

Russian Wedding Traditions

Bridal Dress
<guid

By incorporating elements of heritage into any ceremony, you too can have the wedding of your dreams that will leave your family and friends’ talking about it long after it is over. This is especially true if you are of Russian decent.

If you have a Russian ancestry, like many brides in the U.S., you have the distinct advantage of drawing from a long history and culture of wedding traditions that are unlike any other in the world. They are some of the most romantic and joyous occasions anywhere and ensure that traditions are honored and valued.

Here are just a few of the customs you may want to incorporate on your wedding day:

oSince no ring is given and no announcement is made to signify an engagement, notification to family and friends of the impending nuptials is done in a casual manner. Once notified, however, the Russian groom will visit his bride’s home in search of her a few days prior to the wedding. While she hides, he will bribe family members in the hope they will help him find her. This game of hide-and-seek is great fun and gets the family involved as the date of the nuptials draws closer.

oTo ensure her future happiness, a bride should never wear her dress prior to the day of the wedding. The same thing goes for her shoes. Her mother may not wear either prior to the wedding day otherwise it will bring very bad luck to the marriage. Since all women in Russia can sew, the majority of brides will make their own wedding dresses. Since this garment is not usually passed down to future generations, it is usually sold after the wedding is over.

oSince the law does not acknowledge a church wedding, it has few traditions so many Russian couples participate in a civil ceremony instead. Even those choosing a church wedding must still have a civil ceremony, as well, in order for the marriage to be considered legal. As a result the couple has no attendants.

oReceptions are very important to the people and often last between two days and a week, depending on how long the liquor and food hold out. Guests must be entertained at all times so it is not uncommon for activities to include music, skits, games, etc. During the first day the civil ceremony is held. The bride and groom arrive separately and family and friends do everything they can to keep the couple from meeting. Once they meet they each must then travel in separate cars of a train to the location of the civil ceremony. The couple is then taken throughout the city in order to present their union to the world as well as to visit the deceased in order to honor their memory. This is then followed by the first part of the wedding reception during which a feast is held. Games are played during this event such as kidnapping the bride in order to make the groom pay a ransom in order to get her back or stealing her shoes. The celebration continues until the guests are too exhausted to continue. On the second day of the reception, activities begin at the newlywed’s new home. Since this early period of the day is less hectic, chaotic, and formal usually only close friends and family continue the celebration. When food and drink are served no silverware or glasses are made available and guests are expected to “buy” them in this way further helping the young couple financially. Later in the afternoon or evening guests are treated to a feast after which the bride has to “clean the floor.” This may sound heartless, but in reality the floor is littered with money by the guests who keep dropping money on the floor in order to make the task more difficult for the bride. This is much like the “money dance” held at U.S. weddings.

oAt the reception, “sharing the loaf” is common practice. As the newlyweds attempt to take a bite from a loaf of bread without the use of their hands, guests cheer them on. The leader of the new family is the one, it is said, can take the biggest bite from the load.

oLiquor is a must at wedding receptions as well as an abundance of food. It is not uncommon for guests to eat and drink themselves into a state of unconsciousness.

oMuch like kissing to the sound of ringing bells in the U.S., in Russia couples must kiss to the chanting of the Russian equivalent of “bitter taste,” gorko. They must hold the kiss until the chanting stops, which can be a real challenge for a shy young couple.

oTo bless a couple’s marriage with prosperity, the guests at a Russian wedding will drop coins into a champagne glass. The more money the couple accumulates, the more abundance they will receive during their lives together.

oJust as in Greek weddings, in Russia the couple also breaks a plate. The different is that just like “jumping the broom” at African American weddings, when the couple jumps over the shards of the plate, it signifies their movement in the future.

oThe presentation of salt and bread to the couple during the reception is used to ensure their continued good health and prosperity in their marriage.

There are many more traditions for a Russian wedding that can only add a unique flare to a traditional celebration. The main difference between what are called western weddings and Russian weddings is that they are less formal affairs that are designed to be fun for all guests in attendance. They are a lot of work to create, but so worth it in the end.

Meaningful Rites For Non-Religious Marriage Ceremonies

Bridal Dress
<guid

If you are being married in a religious ceremony, it is quite easy, as the time-honored rites and rituals will already be in place. Couples who prefer to have a secular service, however, will have to make their own choices about what to include in their ceremony. These are some ideas on how to add meaningful rites to a non-religious marriage ceremony.

One way that many couples decide to make their ceremony personal is by writing their own vows. This can be a wonderful way to express your love for your intended, as well as a chance to talk about just what it is that you find so special about your bride or groom. If you do not have a way with words, you can always turn to beautiful verses of poetry to make your feelings known. When in doubt, keep your vows brief, and always keep them in good taste.

There are a number of rituals that can be included in a wedding ceremony that are not based on any one particular faith. The unity candle is a popular symbolic rite that many brides and grooms choose to have as a part of their marriage ceremony. Each person will hold one candle, which they will use to simultaneously light the flame on another larger candle, representing the idea of two becoming one. The unity candle can also symbolize the flames of love, which only increases its appeal.

Some couples like to include their friends and families in the service. At one non-religious wedding that I attended, each guest was given a copy of the bride and groom’s favorite poem. The entire group read it aloud together (it was a fairly small wedding), which was a wonderful way to include everyone assembled in the marriage ceremony. These types of rituals affirm the idea that a married couple is part of a greater community, and that the community affirms that it will support the marriage. It can be quite moving.

Often in second marriages, there are children from a previous relationship. Designing special rituals that include the bride and groom’s children is an excellent idea. Inviting the children to join the bride and groom at some point during the ceremony can be a very special moment. One idea is for the couple to jointly present the children with gifts of wedding jewelry that symbolize their union as a family, much as the exchange of rings between the bride and groom symbolizes that they are being joined as one. Gifts such as lockets with family photos are particularly appropriate for these symbolic wedding jewelry gifts.

When you are looking for non-religious rituals to include in your wedding, don’t forget to research the customs in your heritage. Many nationalities and ethnic groups have special rites that they traditionally include in marriage ceremonies. One of the best known examples of this would be the jumping of the broom that is often a part of African-American weddings. Once you begin looking, you will find that there are all sorts of wonderful customs that can be included in your wedding to give even more meaning to a very special day.

Nontraditional Customs For Your Wedding

Bridal Dress
<guid

There are usually a set of standard ceremony or vowels that are repeated by the bride and groom. More and more, however, bride and grooms are choosing to add ethnic or nontraditional elements to their more ‘traditional’ wedding ceremony.

For example, while it is a tradition in more than one culture, many African-American couples are choosing to include the wedding ceremony of “jumping the broom” to pay honor to their slave roots when the only ceremony a man or woman was allowed for marriage was to jump over a broom to indicate they were setting up housekeeping together. Today, a specially decorated broom is placed in front of the couple as they turn to leave the chapel after just after reciting their wedding vows. They then jump over the broom together to symbolically indicate that bad luck has been swept away as they start their new union and set up housekeeping together.

Depending on the pastor, it may be possible to alter traditional vows. The couple has the option of writing their own, which can be more intimate and a more personalized to the bride and groom. For example, a bride could mention how much she loved her husband-to-be despite the fact that he snores, and the groom could mention that he loved his wife-to-be even though she had cold feet that she insisted on warming up underneath his shirt on cold nights. These vows could even include key lyrics from songs that are meaningful to the couple, poetry, or other sayings that may be relevant in the context of their relationship.

There are other traditions, while less well-known, which are also being incorporated into the modern wedding ceremony. For example, in Scotland, up until the 1940′s, it was possible for a man and woman to be married by declaring in front of three witnesses that they were husband and wife. In some modern ceremonies newly married couples of Scottish ancestry stand up following the other vows in front of the congregation and declare three separate times that they are now married. Another ceremony, which dates the medieval period, is the placing of the ‘handfasting’ cloth, a part of which is decorated by both the bride and groom and then used to tie their hands together as a symbol that the two are now joined as one.

These, like other wedding traditions, may be incorporated into your wedding ceremony with a little thought and planning. If unsure, you can consult with your clergyman to ensure their inclusion. Never be afraid to ask well in advance of the wedding ceremony so you can have the perfect wedding that is personalized just for you and your groom.

Selecting the Right Beer For Your Wedding

Bridal Dress
<guid

Selecting the right beer for your wedding is an easy task for most. The most popular beers in the USA are Bud Light, Miller Light, Budweiser and Coors Light. However, for the past several years, there has been a boon in craft beer sales.

Budweiser is part of the world’s largest brewery company, Anheuser-Busch InBev. Anheuser-Busch is a European owned company but is brewed in the USA. Miller and Coors joined forces and are part of SABMiller. SABMiller has origins in South Africa but has many brewing locations in the USA. InBev and SABMiller account for approximately 95 percent of all beer sales in the USA.

There are more than 1500 microbreweries across the USA and they account for less than 5 percent of all beer sales in the USA. A microbrewery is classified as producing less than 2 million barrels of beer per year and have less than 10 percent ownership by InBev or MillerCoors. In order to take share in the growing craft beer market, InBev and SABMiller have created many stand alone craft beer brands. InBev and SABMiller craft beers include Blue Moon, Leinenkugel’s Sunset Wheat, and Michelob Marzen. InBev also holds a stake in Red Hook and Widmer.

When selecting a beer for your wedding, the green choice is to select a local beer. Buying local beer cuts down on all transportation emissions and supports your local economies. Many local breweries will sell kegs and bottles for your wedding reception. If not, inquire at your local liquor store. If you buy bottles, don’t forget to recycle them.

There are a large amount of beer types being produced every year. The vast majority of beer drinkers in the USA like a light beer in taste and in color. Beer can fall into two classifications: ale and lager, depending on the type of yeast used in creation. The most common accepted beer types are light lagers and pale ales. These popular beers are light in body and have low bitter taste.

A recommendation can be made to beer selectors for weddings to choose beers that will make the most people at your reception happy. Common beer types include pale ale, light lager, and pilsner. I would recommend to stay away from ales that are darker and more full-bodied such as brown ale, porter and stout. However, if this is what the bride and groom like, buy a few six-packs and store them away for yourselves or select few who would enjoy them most.

Popular craft beer selections by American microbreweries include Sam Adams Boston Lager (MA), Sierra Nevada Pale Ale (CA), New Belgium Fat Tire (CO), Pyramid Haywire (WA), New Glarus Spotted Cow (WI), Spoetzl Brewery Shiner Bock (TX).

In conclusion, craft beer is more than a fad. Many beer drinkers are moving toward a more quality tasting beer with true beer ingredients. When selecting beer for your wedding reception, consider local brewery options available. For more information about craft beer, visit Beer Advocate and Beer Wars Movie websites.

Short Cocktail Dresses For the Little Minx in Every Woman

Bridal Dress
<guid

A wedding is not about quantity and over indulgence for the guests that are invited but a chance for them to celebrate with you and enjoy your day in your special way.

When you order your Champagne remember that your guests only need to have a maximum of two glasses each, there will always be a guest that has more and there will always be the guest that does not have any. You can comfortably work on a maximum of two glasses of champagne per guest. A bottle of champagne will give you about 6 glasses therefore for 200 guests you will need 3 cases of 12 bottles of champagne /sparkling wine. If you buy an extra 4 bottles this will give you 2 bottles per table if you have 20 tables of 10 guests each.

When buying your wine consider the following: approximately 30-50% of your guests will drink white wine – Chardonnay is a good option; 30-50% will drink red wine mostly Cabernet and about 10-20% will drink white Zinfandel.

Consider your crowd; more women normally means more white wine, more men will mean more red wine drinkers. Also consider the time of the wedding; more red wine will be needed for an evening.Dinner wedding reception, Alternatively look at 2 bottles per table of 10 as with the Champagne. So for a wedding reception of 200 guests you will need to order/purchase:3 cases x 12 of champagne + 4 bottles 3 cases x 12 White wine (2 cases Chardonnay/1 case Zinfandel)3 cases x 12 red wines

Instead of putting open bottles of wine at the table, which encourages waste, consider asking the venue to organise that the waiters pour the wines offering choice.

Have a chat with the person coordinating the Bar and ensure the following: Bottles of wine served from the bar must only be opened as needed and bottles must not be soaked in ice as this removes or damages the labels. Unopened, undamaged bottles of wine can be returned, thereby saving you money.

I hope this helps you and I hope that many bottles of wine are enjoyed at your wedding and that none are wasted (nor your guests).

“Laugh and be merry together, like brothers akin, Guesting while in the room of a beautiful inn. Glad till the dancing stops, and the lilt of the music ends, laugh till the game is played and be merry my friends.” (John Masefield.-.from laugh and be Merry)

Hen Party Fashion

African Themed Costumes
<guid

The party is given for the bride-to-be as an expression of social and sexual freedom. The term hen party comes from the henna plant, which is part of the wedding traditions of Africa, the Middle East, and parts of Asia where the henna plant is used to create henna ink for temporary tattoos (henna tattoos) that would be applied on the bride’s hand on the night before the wedding for protection.

For bachelorette party celebrations there are various hen night accessories for hens or brides-to-be, such as pink or black tutus. A tutu is part of a costume for a dancer or party goer. A pink tutu is a great fancy dress for a girl’s hen night that will sure to brighten your celebration.
